The US Missile defense Agency (MDA) has successfully conducted a shoot down of a medium range ballistic missile (MRBM) target using an Aegis Baseline 9.C2 system.
During the test – dubbed Flight Test Standard Missile–45 – the system successfully detected, tracked, engaged and launched a missile to intercept the target. It in unclear if the test was conducted at sea of from a land-based system.
“This test authenticates the strengthening global security of the United States and its allies as we deepen the defense capabilities with the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System,” Director Aegis BMD, Paul Klammer said in an MDA release. “This exercise showed that Aegis is the most advanced combat system and the proven choice for a layered defense.”
Aegis Baseline 9 is to be installed into the RAN’s SEA 4000 Hobart class DDGs, and has been specified for the SEA 5000 Hunter class frigates.
