Royal Australian Navy FFG frigate HMAS Sydney has been decommissioned at Garden Island in Sydney after more than three decades of service.
The decommissioning ceremony was attended by the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett and Minister for Defence Senator Marise Payne.
“It is important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the current and former crews who have called Sydney home,” Senator Payne said.
“Her last mission, which concludes in December this year, is the important harbour training ship role, providing the vital technical training that our next generation of sailors need for the new capability on the Royal Australian Navy’s horizon.”
HMAS Sydney was built in the US and commissioned in 1983. One of the Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyers will be named HMAS Sydney, and will be the fifth ship to bear the name.
